SNAKE CONTROL

Revised 6/13/19

Snake removal can be dangerous business. When cornered, snakes will try to strike out and bite. All snakes should be treated with respect and left alone regardless of whether they are venomous or not. The important thing to remember is that most snakes are not aggressive – most will run and some may stand their ground. But if you leave the snake alone, it’ll leave you alone.

Snakes inhabit many ecological niches, and often around structures. They’ll get into pools, screened porches, and at times, the home itself. Snakes can be discouraged from staying in an area by cutting off their food supply. To eliminate potential food sources, take steps to control rodent and insect populations, such as maintaining clean living spaces and storing food in rodent-proof containers.

Another way to control snake populations is to remove shelter options. Clearing yards of refuse piles and frequently mowing grass helps discourage snakes from making their homes in lawns. Sealing up cracks and gaps along exterior walls with fine mesh or caulk also proves effective.

Snakes are seen more often in the spring or fall as they search for food or move to and from a hibernation area. Snakes frequently are associated with small mammal habitats because rodents are a primary food source. For this reason snakes are considered beneficial to man.

Most people are bitten when trying to kill or handle a snake. As a general rule, snakes are just as frightened of you as you are of them. Usually they will move as quickly as possible in the other direction. Snakes cause no property damage, but seeing a snake may frighten some people to the point of hurting themselves trying to escape. Remember, if the snake is encountered outdoors, the best defense is to back slowly away from it.
